When GPS technology was introduced, its main use was in military services. However, over the years its use has extended to many diverse fields of life. Today GPS technology is being used in military, navigation and also as a way of recreation in form of geocaching. The applications of GPS are indeed too many. GPS was introduced primarily to help the military services. Spotting target or cruise missiles has become easier with the use of GPS. The Nuclear Detonation Detection system of USA has also benefited from the use of GPS technology as the satellites which are a part of GPS carry the nuclear detonation detectors. GPS technology has made it possible for the military units to know each other's position with great accuracy even if they are far away from each other. Your timing can also become just perfect if you use the GPS technology. It provides accurate time for NTP clocks or time code generator. The timing of each event is recorded accurately by using a recording apparatus with a precise time source which is provided by GPS. GPS technology has been used to provide detailed and accurate land topography and hence plays an important role in land development. Survey markers, boundaries and other structures can be easily located with the help of GPS. Land and air navigation has been an important application of GPS technology over the years. GPS is used by airplanes to keep a track of their flight path. Many airlines allow the passengers to carry GPS handset so that they can know about their flight path. But many others do not allow the GPS handset for security reasons. Some airlines have equipped their seat back TV's with GPS system so that it becomes easy for passengers to know about the exact location at any point of time. People use GPS handsets in their cars to keep a track of the location of their vehicle. This technology is also used by mountaineers, hikers, glider pilots. The GPS technology is also being used by the common man. Geocaching is a treasure hunt game which used GPS technology to locate the treasure or cache. It's a fun filled recreational activity which has gained a lot of popularity over the period of time. The GPS technology has also been used in doing some social work like helping the visually impaired. Drishti, NOPPA, MoBIC, BrailleNote GPS, Brunel Navigation System for the Blind and Trekker are some of the programs that are working in this direction. GPS technology has touched many fields of life and it is expected that in coming years it will achieve much more! |
